The orange piece is a lid to a cargo area (roughly 16"x22"x4") sorry about the inches. It is what protects the gun and contents during entry or exit. Where I dive in Northern California it is often surgy and the lid (orange piece) would allow it to flip over with no loss of contents. The cargo can be used to place fish or scallops, abalone, etc. If the fish is too big just keep it on top. Most of the fish I get can fit inside no problem, The lid is tethered in four or five places (in the photo 4). It has 100 lbs buoyancy. The lid is also buoyant.
