Shark bites spear fisherman in arm
HONOLULU, June 1 (UPI) -- A Hawaiian man is recovering from a bite inflicted by a shark that attacked him while he was spearfishing with friends.
Ronald Deguilmo was the only one who got a look at his attacker. He described the shark as 9 to 12 feet long, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported.
James Santiago, who was fishing with Deguilmo, said they were about 250 yards from the shore at the time. Santiago and a third man managed to get Deguilmo to the beach after wrapping their T-shirts around his forearm.
Deguilmo suffered damage to tendons, Santiago said. He was expected to have surgery to repair his arm.
Authorities have closed some beaches on the north shore of Oahu.
